![]() For location-based apps, voice control will soon become a must, as asking for directions is the most popular reason to use voice commands. Voice commands are of use in almost any kind of app: fitness, list-making, cooking, healthcare, ecommerce, and video streaming. So, consider Google Assistant development. Want to add voice commands to Android app? Companies that have already added Google Assistant actions to their apps, including TripAdvisor, Telegram, Walmart, and Flixster, have gained serious advantages over their competitors. Google Assistant, like other voice control tools, is becoming more and more popular each day After a user chooses your app a few times while using voice control, Google will remember that preference and won’t ask again, opening your app by default for this type of request. After you add voice control support to your app, it will appear in the list of apps that can perform a certain action. These statistics show that it’s only a matter of time until it becomes common practice for people to use voice commands to find an address or play music. ComScore gives an even more promising forecast, saying that 50% of searches will be done with voice by 2020. Gartner predicts that by 2020, about 30% of searches will be done without a screen. With time, the abilities of voice control become broader, and Google promises to add lots of new skills. RELATED: How to Convert Between Fixed and Dynamic Disks in VirtualBox Fixed size disks will always be their maximum size. Dynamic disks may be up to a certain maximum size-50 GB, for example-but they only actually grow to that maximum size when they contain that much data. This process only works for dynamic disks, which can grow and shrink in size. Step One: Ensure You’re Using a Dynamic Disk But, if you’ve created a dynamic disk, downloaded 10 GB of data into it, and then deleted that 10 GB of data afterwards, you should be able to shrink the disk by about 10 GB. So, if you just created a dynamic disk, this won’t shrink it. Remember that this will only shrink the disk if it’s grown in size and you’ve since removed data. RELATED: Beginner Geek: How to Create and Use Virtual Machines But you can manually shrink a dynamic disk using a hidden command. However, if you delete data from the virtual machine later, you’ll notice that the disk doesn’t automatically shrink. You can make key chains, too.By default, VirtualBox creates dynamic disks that grow over time as you add data. I hope you enjoyed my tutorial and will have fun making your own pins. I don't seal mine and they are holding up fine. I used super glue because patience isn't my strong suit. Let the plastic cool down and apply the pin. You only have a few seconds before it hardens. When it's done, take it out of the oven and press it with the iron if it is not completely flat. After a little while it will uncurl and flatten on it's own. Lay the plastic with the painted side up on a baking sheet and put it in the oven. Don't heat it up, you just need it to apply pressure to flatten the plastic after you take it out of the oven. Preheat your oven (check the instructions of the shrink plastic for the recommended temperature) and get your iron out. You have to try to remove the vinyl without touching the ink. Try not to touch the ink, it might smear. When the ink is dry you can cut the plastic with scissors. You can either cut right on the designs outline or cut with an offset so it will have a white boarder (I did this with the watermelon design). Don't worry if the ink looks a bit uneven, you will hardly be able to see those imperfections on the finished pin. If your stencil is applied well the ink won't bleed. Keep in mind that the colors will get a lot darker as the plastic shrinks. I used alcohol markers, they worked pretty good. You need permanent markers, not much else will stick to the glossy surface of the white shrink plastic. By the way, both sides of the plastic sheet are the same. The vinyl stencil should look like the opposite of what you want in the end.Īpply your transfer sheet and put the vinyl on your shrink plastic. Remember not to weed the parts that you want to stay white. Shrinky Dinks instructions have a ruler that shows you how much the plastic will shrink. I cut mine about 3 inches wide. The finished pins will be about an inch and 1/4". ) If you pick a design that has an organic outline you won't be able to tell that they didn't shrink perfectly proportional. It's not bad but I'm a perfectionist and possibly a little OCD. ![]() Symmetrical designs are not my favorite choice because Shrinky Dinks don't shrink completely proportional. That means circles will look slightly like an oval. Glue (I used super glue but E6000 works great, too)įirst things first, you want to pick a design that works well. Permanent markers (I used alcohol ink markers) So I decided to try something else - white Shrinky Dinks and vinyl stencils. I also wasn't happy that we couldn't do more detailed designs because you can't draw very precisely with a marker. We used the clear sheets and traced images that we had put underneath the sheets. They turned out cute but I didn't like that they were translucent. I've made Shrinky Dinks pins with my kids before. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Gloomwood’s affectation of Thief’s angular, lo-fi geometry is superb, and you get that same sense of strangeness from its crooked buildings and winding pathways. Its syrupy black darkness is punctuated by sallow lanterns and the alabaster glow of the Moon hovering above. Like the Dark Project’s unnamed City, Gloomwood is a Victorian Gothic sprawl of metal and stone, where cobbled streets crisscrossed by tight alleys and ginnels thread between towering tenements. This latter point is also important for one of the ways in which Gloomwood differs from Thief. You can also pick up and stack many in-game objects, barrels, crates etc, to create your own pathways through the game world. Closing a door will muffle any sound stemming from behind it, but you can then lean against the wood to “eavesdrop” on guards shuffling around the far side. For example, sound accurately propagates between rooms and through surfaces. You can move relatively quietly on stone, for example, while metal surfaces will have you clattering around like a professional kitchen.īut Gloomwood also replicates many lesser systems of Thief. Thief’s light crystal is replaced with a waxing and waning moon that shows you how visible you are, while different floor-types affect the loudness of your footsteps. Stealth is both light and sound based, with shadows and silence being your two most effective weapons. Gloomwood dives deep into replicating the base mechanics of Thief for its own purposes. But the house is fortified with a magical barrier that can only be disabled by finding two talismans, one housed in the nearby jail, and the other located somewhere in Gloomwood’s sprawling docks. Your initial objective is to rendezvous with an associate who goes by “G”, hiding in a manor house on Main Street. Gloomwood puts you in the role of a nameless doctor in a city ravaged by a mysterious affliction, which could be a disease, or could be something else. From the couple of hours I’ve spent with Gloomwood’s (now available) demo, the results are potentially very interesting. Developers Dillon Rogers and David Szymanski (who previously created the splendid retro-FPS DUSK) have their own ideas of what it wants to do with Thief’s template. That isn’t to say, however, that Gloomwood exists purely as a tribute. From art to audio to systems, it is a delicately crafted homage to the original stealth masterpiece, one that seeks to remind you of all was great about Looking Glass’ most successful game. But Gloomwood is a pastiche in the original sense of the word, namely elevation through celebration. Today pastiche is often used as a derogatory term, for artworks that are viewed as a lesser version of an earlier, better creation. Gloomwood, however, drinks more deeply from Garrett’s (presumably stolen) cup, entering into the more specific territory of pastiche. The Dishonored series was “inspired” by Thief, taking the broad design ideas and spinning them off with a bunch of other concepts into something largely new. It would be easy to say that Gloomwood is inspired by Thief: The Dark Project.
